Strengthening Fisheries Monitoring in Cameroon with NEMO and TRITON Solutions

With nearly 400 kilometers of coastline along the Gulf of Guinea, Cameroon has a maritime area that is essential to its economy and the food security of coastal communities. The fisheries sector represents a major activity for thousands of artisanal and industrial fishers operating mainly around Douala, Kribi, and Limbe.
Cameroonian waters host a wide range of fishery resources, including shrimp, tuna species, sardines, mackerel, and several highly valued demersal species that are particularly sought after on local and regional markets.
However, monitoring fishing activities remains a challenge in certain maritime areas where terrestrial network coverage is limited. In this context, satellite-based vessel monitoring solutions play a key role in ensuring continuous at-sea communications, improving fisheries control, and strengthening the fight against illegal fishing.
Deployment of NEMO and TRITON VMS Beacons in Douala
As part of efforts to strengthen maritime surveillance in Cameroon, CLS teams recently carried out the installation of several VMS beacons in Douala using the NEMO and TRITON solutions.
This deployment aims to enhance the monitoring of fishing vessels through satellite surveillance technologies capable of transmitting real-time positioning data, even in areas beyond the reach of conventional communication networks.
Field operations also enabled the validation of data transmissions through mobile and satellite connectivity tests conducted directly on board the equipped vessels.
How Are VMS Equipment Installations Carried Out?
Deploying VMS (Vessel Monitoring System) equipment requires several technical steps to ensure reliable and continuous operation at sea.
CLS teams provide:
- configuration and activation of VMS beacons;
- satellite and mobile connectivity testing;
- validation of real-time data transmissions;
- operational support and training for local teams using the equipment.
This methodology ensures the effective integration of maritime surveillance systems and continuous vessel tracking, including in maritime areas with limited network coverage.
NEMO and TRITON: Satellite Solutions Dedicated to Fisheries Monitoring
The NEMO and TRITON solutions developed by CLS are designed to meet the needs of authorities in fisheries monitoring, vessel tracking, and sustainable marine resource management.
Thanks to satellite communications and real-time data transmission tools, these solutions make it possible to:
- strengthen fisheries control;
- improve the safety of fishers at sea;
- support the sustainable management of fishery resources;
- combat IUU fishing (Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated fishing).
CLS VMS technologies therefore contribute to the development of more sustainable fisheries and better protection of marine resources in Cameroonian waters.
Collaboration Supporting Sustainable Fisheries Management
This deployment was carried out in close collaboration with ETS BETHANIES, the Fisheries Control and Surveillance Brigade (BCSAP), and the Ministry of Livestock, Fisheries and Animal Industries (MINEPIA).
Together, the partners involved are contributing to strengthening Cameroon’s maritime surveillance capabilities and developing innovative solutions for sustainable fisheries management.
