Marine Management Organisation logoThe UK has decided to regulate inshore fishing through the Marine Management Organisation (MMO), which has established regulations for vessels under 12m.

The CLS NEMO beacon has been certified by MMO to meet the needs of these vessels.

CLS is proud to have sold 1,200 NEMOs in the UK, in 190 different ports to comply with MMO regulations.

Meeting the Challenge: NEMO I-VMS Installed on Inshore Vessels Across 190 Ports

Since 2003 The Vessel Monitoring Systems using satellite technology has been used by all European fishing vessels measuring 12 metres +.

In 2013 the MMO also applied for a new idea and potential law to monitor fishing vessels under 12m to protect the shorelines, fishing habits and track the path of fishers to ensure they are not entering prohibited areas.

The Marine Management Organisation certified Inshore Vessel Monitoring System (I-VMS) mandatory by law for all inshore vessels at sea in English waters from April 2024.

CLS transmitter NEMO, a hybrid solar panel, I-VMS was type-approved in November 2021.

This was a big challenge for CLS and for MMO, with the aim of equipping and installing more than 2,000 boats in 190 different ports along the English coast. Thanks to the European Maritime & Fisheries Fund (EMFF), the cost of purchasing and installing the NEMOs was covered.

It was also a race against time, as well as a real logistical challenge. The European Maritime & Fisheries Fund (EMFF) had set a deadline of December 2023 for the application of its grant.

We can now announce that more than 80% of the objectives in terms of vessel equipment have been achieved.

The fishing fleet equipped are all vessels under 12m LOA. The roll out schedule phased out in 4 fleet segments, which are as follows:

  • 10-11.99m (180),
  • 8-9.99m (680),
  • 6-7.99m (640),
  • under 6m (660)

Simple, Reliable, Affordable I-VMS

NEMO is a solar-powered transmitter, and part of the first all-in-one system specifically designed for monitoring and protecting small-scale fisheries. NEMO provides hybrid global connectivity, using GPRS/IoT networks in coastal areas and automatically switching to satellite systems when the vessel moves outside the range of terrestrial networks.

CLS offers services range from basic delivery of data collected and processed in CLS’ data center, data integration with client’s fisheries monitoring center and access to CLS’ web platform for data visualization, alert management and customized analytics.

How NEMO is the best I-VMS for small-scale fisheries in the UK

UK portIn 2017, when the consultation started, there were more than 3000 fishing vessels around the UK’s coasts. Among those 3000 fishing vessels, only 327 were 12 metre+.

MMO decided that they had to do something in order to monitor and track the more than 2.700 fishing vessels that were not monitored and tracked. This would enhance, improve and most importantly future-proof the monitoring side of the fishing industry in the UK.

Small, reliable, affordable, the NEMO is more than a simple GPS tracker, getting NEMO is getting a true VMS with all its proven benefits, with certifications of quality and performance, while also acquiring a hassle-free device that will improve your safety at sea. If you’re in trouble while fishing, a call for assistance button is ready to send alerts, even outside mobile phone range.

Purchasing a NEMO is also purchasing the CLS’ expertise, a global leader in Vessel Monitoring Systems with devices that fit your needs directly, whether it is for small-scale fisheries or industrial fisheries.
